In 2003, the City of Detroit was among the final list of five cities invited by the NCAA Mens Basketball Site Selection Committee to assemble bid presentations for one of four available Final Four Tournaments in years 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. While the city's primary appeal was its new, state-of-the-art Ford Field venue, the Committee needed to be convinced that the area's hotels, attractions, city center, corporate commitment, and overall hospitality would be worthy of successfully hosting what has become the preeminent event in collegiate athletics.
The DMCVB and D-Sports contacted Tom Constand - a core member of the bid presentation team that assembled Detroit's winning Super Bowl XL bid - and engaged the services of starrconstand to again assemble the right presentation elements for both the Committee site inspection in May and the final presentation in Phoenix the following month.
Working with the City of Detroit, Ford Field, the City of Dearborn, D-Sports and the DMCVB, starrconstand conducted the tour of the city, spearheaded presentation concept development, script writing for all presenters, presentation/speaker training, and overall project coordination.
The successful bid effort not only resulted in Detroit being selected to host the event in 2009, but also earned the city a spot on the final list of ten cities invited to bid for yet another Final Four in years 2012 through 2016 - and starrconstand again coordinated the bid presentation effort in November 2008 in Indianapolis. Presenters in Indianapolis included Matt Cullen, President and COO of Rock Enterprises, Tom Lewand, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Detroit Lions, Larry Alexander, President and CEO of the DMCVB, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and Detroit Mayor Ken Cockrel Jr..
"starrconstand's contribution to the NCAA Final Four bid presentation wasn't just their outstanding creative and technical work in developing the presentation on short notice, but also their strategic insights and work in identifying and telling Detroit's story in a compelling manner," said Larry Alexander. "They have been and continue to be a great partner for us thanks to their ability to work with a very complex brand in a creative and effective manner."
