The UDM Athletic Department generated a lot of exciting news in 2008, including the announcements of new sports programs, new facilities, a new men’s basketball coaching staff, and the hosting of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. Yet, the UDM Titans program was burdened by an outdated and uninspiring logo that carried little or no brand identity amongst current or perspective recruits, coaches, staff, or alumni. UDM also has the challenge of being an institution formed out of the consolidation in 1990 of two schools with strong brand identities, The University of Detroit (founded in 1877) and Mercy College of Detroit (founded in 1941).

In keeping with its expanding athletic offerings and emerging reputation, the Athletic Department needed a powerful logo that would be instantly recognizable and inspirational to its entire community, while reflecting the University’s deep commitment to the city of Detroit. After a thorough selection process that included many national firms, Detroit-based starrconstand, who worked with UDM during Detroit’s successful bid process for the 2009 Men’s Basketball Final Four, was chosen to lead the effort.

starrconstand convened meetings with university administrators, athletes and staff in order to gain their input and translate their desires into the new identity. The end result was one that starrconstand and UDM felt captured the newly energized Titans spirit, while maintaining the historical legacy of the university.

The design, a sword and shield with the name “Detroit Titans” boldly presented across the middle, combined the University’s traditional colors of red, white, and blue with accents of grey for enhanced depth. The logo will be incorporated into every aspect of UDM Titan Athletics throughout the 2008-09 school year, including a center-court display on the renovated Calihan Hall basketball court.

“We have been impressed with starrconstand’s work in the past,” said Keri Gaither, UDM Athletic Director, “and we were confident their team could fully embrace the task at hand. We are delighted with the results and are proud to display the new Detroit Titans logo.”
