In 2006, traumatic brain injury was considered a silent epidemic as the most misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and underfunded disease in the U.S. that no one knew about, affecting 1.4 million Americans every year more than breast cancer, multiple sclerosis, HIV/AIDS, and spinal cord injuries combined. Accordingly, the Brain Injury Association of America struggled in obscurity to gain national awareness for both itself and the cause it so passionately represented.

Fortunes changed dramatically in 2007 due to two significant occurrences: the release of a series of in-depth, front-page Wall Street Journal articles revealing and detailing elements of the effects of traumatic brain injury, and ABC News Anchor Bob Woodruffs well-publicized return to television from his own traumatic brain injury sustained in Iraq and subsequent in-depth coverage of the post-injury plight of military TBI survivors returning from conflict.

As a board member of the Brain Injury Association of America, Tom Constand offered the services of starrconstand on a pro-bono basis to leverage the awareness opportunities created by these two significant events.

starrconstand associates worked with Association staff to develop media lists, media training, key messaging, and news release templates prior to the release of the Wall Street Journal stories for over 40 state affiliates to utilize in their local markets.

Similar information was assembled and distributed to all state affiliates in advance of Bob Woodruffs return to ABC News and his subsequent coverage of TBI in the military. In addition, starrconstand worked closely with ABC News producers in Chicago, New York and Washington D.C., identifying and coordinating interviews with TBI medical experts and survivors and Woodruff who were featured in his coverage.

Subsequent efforts included the brokering and coordination of interview opportunities with local, national, and international media outlets on all aspects of TBI, resulting in over 500 million media impressions and a 247% increase in coverage from the previous year.
